“Through a wonderful program called foster-to-adopt, my husband I became foster parents to two wonderful boys who we eventually adopted. I’ll never forget that day that Thomas came home to us.
This beautiful, sleeping boy was emotionless – no crying, smiling, no emotion whatsoever. Undoubtedly he’d been disappointed by every adult he’d known up to this point. He’d been placed in eight separate homes over six months. Our hearts went out to this sweet little boy. One month later, Thomas’s big brother Conner joined us.
He was also asleep when we picked him up. His reaction could not have been more different from Thomas’s. When he woke up he gave me the widest, happiest smile I’d ever seen. But, like Thomas, the trauma he’d experienced had affected him deeply. He displayed attention-seeking behavior constantly and his emotions were all over the map.
Slowly over time both boys realized we were unlike other adults in their lives. We weren’t going to give up on them and most importantly they weren’t going anywhere; they were home. Going from zero kids with no parental experience to two rambunctious toddlers was tough. We were elated and scared to death all at the same time! We had little idea how to parent children but especially those with such traumatic starts to their lives.
“Thank you for supporting PCHAS, an agency whose loving staff has helped so many foster children find happiness in forever homes.”-The Turners
What is Foster Care?
When matching foster parents with children, we carefully consider the unique needs of each child and the characteristics of the family. Our staff carefully screens, trains, and supports foster families financially and emotionally.
Our “Fostering Connections” service places children with family members, such as grandparents or aunts and uncles. The relatives are eligible to become foster parents and receive foster care benefits. Our Foster Care Program serves children aged 0-18, who, like most of our clients, come from backgrounds of abuse, neglect, poverty, and abandonment. We have program offices in: Austin, Dallas, Houston, Waxahachie, and Wichita Falls.
